I remember in 9th grade wanting to try out for the track team. I enjoyed running, but I had never been trained. So I decided to step out of my comfort zone and try out.
Well the day of try outs came but I ended up staying home sick, and was unable to return for several days. (Knowing now that stress can weaken you immune making you susceptible to getting sick….I would have approached this goal differently)
Within a few days I was well enough to return. The coach knowing I had planned on trying out, gave me an opportunity during class to go out on the track, just the time keeper and myself to try out.
Sounds like an easy thing to do…but unfortunately the time keeper was a teenage boy…and for an awkward 9th grader that was the first trigger for stress.
My goal was to run the 220, so I found my place on the starting line, and nervously waited for his signal.
The whistle blew and off I ran giving every ounce of energy I had.
About half way around the track my mind started filling with thoughts like…
“you are not going fast enough”, “your moving too slow”. “you will never make the team” these thoughts continued to loop around my mind until…….
I stopped right on the track 3/4 of the way through. All of a sudden this young man started yelling at me. “What are you doing? Why did you STOP!” I yelled back… “I wasn’t going fast enough”. His reply,… “Are you kidding?!!!! if you had kept going you would have beat the record,”
“Go back and I will give you one more chance.”
Well I went back to the starting line and started over…this time I finished but my time was too slow to be on the team. I had given all I could the first time and was simply out of steam.
I will never forget that experience and how my negative thoughts overtook me. I allowed them to stop me from doing what I desired to do.
I gave up too soon ! Have you ever experienced something like that?
Lesson learned!!!! I have made a commitment to myself to stay on track to the finish no matter what, or how I think I am doing.
Negative thoughts stop great things from happening in our life. They hold on to old pain that need not be there. They keep us from feeling that we are important or realizing that we are making a difference.
When you control and focus your mind, you control your destiny.
