I have had a great experience working in the hospitality industry these last few months. Experiences like these are good life lessons. As much as I love working with the public, there have been a few times that I have been down right surprised at peoples’ attitudes and how demeaning they can be.
For example one night I escorted in 40+ people of a tour bus and into an all ready crowded restaurant. To keep everything flowing smoothly myself and a waiter worked together giving directions as to where to sit. Everyone is very hospitable and willing to work with you; however, there are those few, who for one reason or another, choose to rebel. Rather than following our directions they promptly head off choosing their own group of tables away from their group. This act of defiance appears to be their attempt of declaring their independents and doing it in a manner that resembles a defiant two year-old.
This may not seem like a big deal, but I have seen co-workers come unglued, frustrated by the lack of co-operation as they attempt to accommodate every ones needs. Not for me though, rather I find an experience such as this, an opportunity to step up enthusiastically to the challenge. My secret mission, if I choose to accept, is to change the inner attitude that holds these individuals hostage bringing back the miss-placed gleam of enthusiasm and sparkle right back into their eyes.
How do I plan on doing this?
- By helping them shift their present emotional position.
- By using words that resonate a higher mindset and happy attitude.
- By offering simple gestures of kindness, hoping to guide their inner feeling of value and worth giving them encouragement to vibrate at a much higher frequency.
Within a short period my experiment turns out positive. Their new emotional attitude resonates from a joyful sound so clear and true, that their presence impacts the rest of the group. For them to go from bold, harsh resistance to a peaceful calming influence was a thrill to my soul.
I enjoy the challeng to initiate change. To create a change so gentle, yet so real, that the emotional message which vibrates from one individual to another rings out an impactful message of…You do make a difference – You have great value!
